Medical Breakthrough: Japan Develops "Universal" Lab-Grown Blood That Requires No Refrigeration

In a major scientific breakthrough that could potentially end the global blood shortage crisis Japanese scientists have successfully developed stable, "universal" artificial blood. This innovative blood substitute can be administered to any patient without the need for blood type matching or refrigeration.

How Was It Created?
Led by Professor Hiromi Sakai at Nara Medical University in Japan, the research team designed artificial red blood cells that can be given to any patient regardless of their blood type.

To create this universal substitute, scientists extract hemoglobin from expired human donor blood—which is typically discarded—and encapsulate it within protective lipid shells. These artificial cells, known as Hemoglobin Vesicles (HbV), perfectly mimic the oxygen-carrying capabilities of natural blood but lack the surface proteins that trigger immune responses. This eliminates the need for crossمmatching tests.
